The Code becomes ACoP

22 December 2025      Tamsin Lester, CUBO-UUK Code Support Officer

Exciting Developments for The Code

Over the last three years the strategy for the UUK/GuildHE Accommodation Code of Practice has been successfully implemented with huge strides in strengthening governance, team resources and visibility of The Code for students and members and completing a review of The Code itself.

The increasing visibility and impact of The Code, coupled with robust governance, financial stability and strategic ambitions which will benefit both our current and future members, now presents The Code with the opportunity to operate wholly as an entity in its own right.

We're therefore excited to announce that from 1st January, The Code will be the latest organisation to operate directly within Professional HE Services Ltd (PHES), the not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, owned entirely by its member HE institutions. PHES is a shared service that provides the legal framework for different HE sector organisations to be run effectively, share staff and operational resources.

The Code will become ACoP, a Special Interest Organisation (SIO), joining a number of other highly regarded sector organisations - AUDE, AULP, BUFDG, CHEIA, CUBO, HESPA, SCHOMS and UHR. CUBO, who have administered The Code for a number of years have developed the foundation for Code administration and moving forward, will continue to be an integral part of the sector’s representation on the Governance Board and the Compliance, Assurance and Scrutiny Board (CASB).

The new SIO will enable ACoP to be independent of any sector association whilst ensuring that the interests of students, institutional members, professional associations and key regulatory bodies are represented throughout its governance processes and most importantly, provide clear evidence of sector statutory compliance and raising standards.

We believe this is a hugely positive step in the positioning, development and strategic ambitions of The Code and as ACoP we look forward to working with you in 2026.

Mark Swales, FIoL

Chair of the UUK/GuildHE ACoP Governance Board
